Hello and welcome to: Love My Writing Voice blog!
Do your ideas stagnate in your head? Let me help!
I love putting words together in various forms, pen and paper, computer and keyboard. What I struggle with is ideas that come to me when I don't have either form nearby!
Usually when I'm washing dishes, driving, or just doing some mundane task, that's when I have the best story ideas, the best scenes, the best dialogue ever written!
Of course, 2 seconds later I've forgotten the thought, the pen doesn't work or paper is an old receipt that won't hold ink! Argh!!
During my writing process, I've tried several different techniques to help me get the ideas out of my head. It's great to have so many thoughts fighting to win the race to the page but going from thought to paper sometimes I couldn't keep up. The jumble of a story idea fighting it's way out of my brain was absolute chaos, I couldn't get the story into an outline form to save my life!
Don't get me wrong, writing is a lot fun but it's difficult to get the story off the ground when you have it going in 16 different directions. Like directing kids at the playground, everyone running amok, fighting for the swings!
I've tried brainstorming, which is similar to brain dumping except done in a group format. Usually when I've got an idea I need to brain dump immediately.
I grab my computer, if I'm home, or a pen and notebook if I'm at work or in the car, and I write. Write the idea, write the phrase, write the scene. I just write! I write until the idea is no longer 'nagging' me.
And that is how you Brain Dump! Just write whatever idea is in your brain at the moment. Write everything you know about the subject, even the weird stuff. It will help you formulate a story idea.
